Lack of access to safe drinking water is a reality for many communities in the Amazon, despite the region containing the largest river basin in Brazil. Insufficient access to potable water is directly linked to the high levels of food insecurity and rural poverty observed across the region.

This project aims to expand access to water through the support of the Amazon Fund and by leveraging the expertise and methodologies developed under Brazil’s Cisterns Program. The project will implement social technologies for water access to promote productive inclusion and improve living conditions, food security, and nutrition among communities in the Lower Amazon region of Pará State.

The project is being carried out within the framework of Public Call MDS No. 12/2024, which sought to select institutions eligible to apply for Amazon Fund support for the implementation of social technologies that provide access to quality water for human consumption, food production, and family support services aimed at social and productive inclusion in the Legal Amazon region. The initiative specifically targets federal sustainable-use protected areas, including Extractive Reserves (RESEX) and National Forests (FLONA), quilombola communities, and agro-extractive settlement projects, in accordance with the purpose, rules, and guidelines of the Amazon Fund.
