Project selected within the scope of the Amazon Fund’s Public Call for Projects – Consolidation and Strengthening of Sustainable and Inclusive Value Chains

CONTEXTUALIZATION

The Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM), a non-governmental and non-profit scientific organization founded in 1995, is dedicated to developing and supporting Sustainable Family Agroextractivist Production initiatives in the Amazon. These initiatives promote the inclusion of rural producers and their grassroots organizations in discussions on production models that do not require deforestation. IPAM’s mission is “to promote science, education, and innovation for an environmentally healthy, economically prosperous, and socially just Amazon and Cerrado.” Its purpose is “to consolidate, by 2035, a tropical development model for the Amazon and Cerrado through knowledge generation, implementation of local initiatives, and influence on public policies, contributing to economic development, social equity, and environmental conservation.”
 
The organization’s strategic work is based on three pillars: sustainable family production, protected natural territories, and low-carbon agriculture and livestock systems. Through the sustainable family production pillar, under which this project falls, IPAM seeks to increase rural incomes, improve food security, and help end deforestation, recognizing family farmers as a key group for sustainable development in the Amazon.
 
This project was developed under the framework of the Amazon Fund Public Call for Proposals No. 01/2017, which aimed to select projects eligible for non-reimbursable financing to promote sustainable and inclusive value chains. The project follows the aggregator model, in which the lead institution coordinates an integrated arrangement of subprojects implemented by partner organizations. 

THE PROJECT

The project aims to strengthen bioeconomy value chains in the Amazon, generating income for family farmers and traditional communities, valuing the standing forest, and contributing to the reduction of deforestation.
 
Key deliverables (products and services) proposed under the project include: 

Component 1 – Cross-cutting Activities

  • Training programs covering business management, administrative and financial management, and good production and management practices;
  • Market studies to identify commercialization opportunities.

Component 2 – Carvão Agroextractivist Family School (AEFAC)

  • Establishment of an agro-processing facility;
  • Provision of Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Services (ATER);
  • Training programs covering business management, administrative and financial management, and good production and management practices;
  • Organizational strengthening, including the acquisition of equipment; and
  • Establishment of a computer laboratory for AEFAC.

Component 3 – Macacoari Agroextractivist Family School (AEFAM)

  • Provision of Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Services (ATER);
  • Training programs covering administrative and financial management and good production and management practices;
  • Organizational strengthening, including the acquisition of a boat and equipment; and
  • Construction of a meeting and event facility.

Component 4 – Association of Agroextractivist Workers of the Baquia Gurupá Sector (ATASB)

  • Provision of Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Services (ATER);
  • Establishment of an agro-processing facility;
  • Training programs covering administrative and financial management and good production and management practices;
  • Organizational strengthening, including the acquisition of a boat and equipment; and
  • Development of a business plan.

Component 5 – Association of Açaí Processors of Macapá (ASBAP)

  • Training programs covering good production practices, management, and entrepreneurship;
  • Investment in equipment for açaí processors;
  • Institutional strengthening, including the acquisition of equipment; and
  • Investments in promotional and outreach activities for açaí processors.

Component 6 – Living, Producing and Preserving Foundation (FVPP)

  • Provision of Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Services (ATER);
  • Training programs covering good production and management practices;
  • Investments in agro-processing facilities; and
  • Investments in commercialization activities, including the development of a Business Plan.

Component 7 – Federation of Residents’ Associations, Communities and Organizations of the Eixo Forte Agroextractivist Settlement (FAMCEFF)

  • Provision of Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Services (ATER);
  • Establishment of community nurseries;
  • Implementation of Agroforestry Systems (AFS);
  • Training programs covering administrative and financial management;
  • Investments in agro-processing facilities;
  • Investments in commercialization activities, including the development of a Business Plan; and
  • Institutional strengthening, including the acquisition of equipment.

Component 8 – Federation of Quilombola Organizations of Santarém (FOQS)

  • Provision of Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Services (ATER);
  • Establishment of community nurseries;
  • Implementation of Agroforestry Systems (AFS);
  • Establishment of an agro-processing facility;
  • Training programs covering administrative and financial management;
  • Investments in commercialization activities, including the development of a Business Plan; and
  • Institutional strengthening, including the acquisition of equipment.

Component 9 – Association of Family Farmers of Batata (ASAFAB)

  • Provision of Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Services (ATER);
  • Implementation of Agroforestry Systems (AFS);
  • Establishment of an agro-processing facility;
  • Training programs covering administrative and financial management;
  • Institutional strengthening, including the acquisition of equipment; and
  • Investments in commercialization activities, including the development of a Business Plan.

Component 10 – Project Management

Expected Results

  • Consolidation and strengthening of value chains, such as açaí and cocoa, through improvements in production processes and the expansion and diversification of marketing strategies;
  • Strengthening of the institutions involved in project implementation through capacity-building activities and knowledge-exchange initiatives;
  • Increased income levels and improved quality of life for producers.

INTERVENTION LOGIC

This project falls under the “Sustainable Production” (1) within the Logical Framework of the Amazon Fund. It contributes to the following direct effects: (1.1) Identification and development of economic activities based on the sustainable use of forests and biodiversity; (1.2) Expansion of the added value of agroforestry and biodiversity product chains; (1.3) Strengthening of managerial and technical capacities for implementing economic activities based on the sustainable use of forests and biodiversity; (1.4) Recovery and productive use of deforested and degraded areas for economic and ecological conservation purposes.
